SONIC JOURNEYS

In an age where music can be experienced anywhere, Sonic Journeys will connect music with the timeless inspiration of the British landscape, presenting a pastoral music for the modern age.
sounduk wants to commission John Surman and Gavin Bryars to respond to a stretch of the London to west of England and London to north of England railway journeys. The works will be recorded and then ‘performed’ to passengers whilst travelling through the relevant stretch of the journey via personal headphones.
Sonic Journeys draws on a powerful source of inspiration for creating new music as well as an innovative and inclusive way of experiencing it. The project will harness the talent of two of the UK’s most creative artists enabling them to respond to specific stretches of the UK countryside to create the first of what we hope will be a new collection of contemporary aural landscapes. Presenting these new works to passengers whilst they are moving through the landscapes themselves, both enhances their musical experience and makes contemporary British music accessible to a new and diverse audience. We very much hope that Sonic Journeys will have an impact in terms of the works created but also the potential to inspire similar projects across transport networks.
