One of DJ Mag’s ‘Ones to Watch 2022’, award-winning DJ and Turntablist NikNak presents her exciting new project.
Sankofa is an immersive sound and visual experience exploring the narrative of a young black woman, Afrofuturism and her comic book heroes.
NikNak creates a new sonic world and realises her superhuman abilities through Turntablism.
With live improvised Turntablism NikNak sculpts soundscapes that combine with visual artist Loëpa’s imagery.
The use of surround sound and the live interplay between visuals and audio creates a unique sound world to explore.
A member of the Eve's Drop DJ Collective, NikNak is a ground-breaking multidisciplinary artist and became the first Black Turntablist in history to win the illustrious Oram Award in 2020.
The album Sankofa released on music tech label Inventing Waves on 1st July 2022.
NikNak is one of Sound UK's Sound Generator Artists 2021 and we are delighted to be supporting her new project and producing the tour.
Support for the live dates comes from XANA, who takes words and sounds from the audience and the space and uses vocal layering, drum machines and scratching to produce a live loop improvised set. The set will also feature a haptic vest for Deaf or hard of hearing audience members to wear the music of the show on their back whilst Xana plays.
Tour produced by Sound UK. Funded by Arts Council England and PRS Foundation. Sound UK is a PRS Foundation Talent Development Partner supported by PPL.
