A sonic and visual sensation, 10 analogue Moog keyboards gather on stage at the hands of some of the most skilful and innovative rock, contemporary classical and jazz musicians.
As one half of the electronic music sensation Goldfrapp, keyboard-player and composer Will Gregory is one of the UK’s leading advocates of using synthesizers and electronic instruments to create new sounds and reinvent old ones.
The Will Gregory Moog Ensemble perform a mixture of specially composed music, transcriptions of classical works, and their own versions of music from popular culture and film scores.
Their album, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project, was released on Mute Records in May 2024. Originally commissioned by BBC National Orchestra of Wales, this new set of music is based on principles by Archimedes, arguably one of the world’s greatest ever polymaths, and interspersed with his most celebrated theories.
The ensemble features illustrious names from the world of pop and classical music, including Adrian Utley of Portishead, Florence and the Machine’s Hazel Mills and composer Graham Fitkin – each bringing their distinctive musicianship to the retro-futurist world of fizzing, funky synths.
In this special live show, the ensemble will be joined by Britten Sinfonia to premiere Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra - Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project, inspired by the theorems of the ancient Greek mathematician and physicist Archimedes. Alongside the work, there will be fascinating insights into the connections between maths and music.
The concert’s first half focuses on synthy, sci-fi movie soundtracks and simultaneously pays tribute to electronic music’s two great female pioneers: the BBC Radiophonic Workshop’s Delia Derbyshire and Wendy Carlos, creator of Moog-overdubbed Bach arrangements and the score for Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange.
Presented in surround sound by Turner Sims and the University of Southampton Department of Music’s Future Producers, this one-off performance explores ways of combining monosynths and demonstrates their fantastic versatility. The ensemble will perform works by Bach, John Carpenter, extracts from A Clockwork Orange, and new music from their first album, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project.
